A New Year, Our 10th Year, and the Path to Equity in Science

We first discussed creating The Measure of Everyday Life with WNCU leadership in 2014. As 2024 dawns, so does the tenth year of our collaboration on air. Putting a spotlight on all of the contributions which researchers make to our understanding of the lives we lead together at times has been challenging but always has been rewarding. One of our most important goals is to connect data with discourse: the data which many researchers and practitioners generate and the discourse of policymakers, professionals, and people at the dinner table talking with family and friends.

In the United States, we formally commemorate the thoughts and ideas of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., every January, which offers an opportunity to look at how well we have done in achieving equity and an opportunity to look ahead. On the first new episode of the new year, we had an opportunity to consider data on the experiences of graduate students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics who identify as Black or Hispanic. The picture is not ideal and yet it also offers quite a bit of hope. You can listen to that episode here.

Serious engagement with the state of the world as it is and a tendency to look for hope characterize many of the conversations we have been privileged to have. Thank you for joining us as we celebrate this tenth year of staying curious.
